Helmets

You must wear an approved SA2000 or SA2005 helmet at this time for all Driver Ed events. "SA" indicates that it is "Snell Approved" as an automotive helmet. The numbers "2000" or "2005" indicate the helmet conforms to the standards of the year specified. There may be more stringent helmet requirements as dictated by PCA Zone 8 Rules or the specific Event Rules. To provide the best possible protection, a helmet should be replaced after approximately 5-8 years, as the materials used in their construction degrade with time regardless of the actual amount of use. Exposure to sunlight or extensive use may accelerate the process. If a helmet is subjected to even moderate impacts such as being dropped on the ground, then their protective capability may be compromised and are therefore no longer usable.

Motorcycle helmets, also known as "M" rated helmets are not allowed. "M" rated helmets are required to only be designed for a single impact, like falling on the ground, and their use thereafter is inadvisable. The biggest difference between automotive racing helmets and motorcycle helmets is that motorcycle helmets are not fire-resistant. That is why we require the use of "SA" rated Helmets and do not allow "M" rated helmets. SNELL Foundation Helmets rated: SA2000 or SA2005 are required at this time. If they are not cleared marked with either "SA2000" or "SA2005" on the inside of the helmet, they are not properly certified.

Although some events provide for loan or rental of helmets at the track, you must check first with the Event Chairman for availability. We recommend that you make arrangements to purchase your own closed face SA2005 helmet with flip-up visor. You should also consider getting a HANS "head and neck support" system at the same time for neck protection. Two places in town have Snell Approved (SA) helmets in stock:
